Die-cut lids

Tyvek® lids, die-cut for rigid trays

A lid closes a rigid tray and forms the porous, peelable side of the package. We die-cut heat-seal coated Tyvek® lids in our ISO Class 8 cleanroom, shaped to your tray and ready for your sealer. Prototype lids ship in weeks, not months, and there is no minimum order.

When to choose die-cut lids

  • Your device ships in a rigid tray

Lids close PETG, PVC, HDPE, HIPS, and PP trays. Tell us your tray resin and sealer. If the device travels in a pouch, see pouches and bags.
  • The device is heavy or sharp

Tyvek® 1073B is the strongest medical grade, which suits orthopedic implants and surgical kits.
  • You want finished lids, not rollstock

Die-cut eaches go straight to your tray sealer. If your line cuts lids from the roll, see coated Tyvek® rollstock.
  • You need prototypes quickly

Send your tray spec, or a sample tray if you don't have one, and we cut prototype lids in weeks, not months, with no minimum order.
  • You need to match a validated lid

Send the current lid spec, its revision and the material callout. We cut to it as written and don't change the grade or coating without your written approval.

The basics

What to know before you specify or re-source

How a coated lid seals to a rigid tray

A coated Tyvek® lid carries a heat-seal coating on the side that faces the tray. On a tray sealer, a heated platen presses the lid onto the tray flange. The coating softens and bonds to the flange, closing the package.

The Tyvek® itself stays porous, so sterilant gas can pass through the lid for EtO while the web keeps microorganisms out. Seal settings depend on your tray material and equipment, so establish the sealing window in your own process validation under ISO 11607-2. Seal strength is commonly tested to ASTM F88, and seal integrity with methods such as ASTM F1929 dye penetration.

Tabbed lids and easy peel

A peel tab is an edge of the lid left unsealed. It gives the user something to grip, so the peel starts easily and the lid comes away from the tray in one motion.

Tabs help when the package is opened with gloved hands. Tell us where the tab should sit when you send the tray spec.

FAQ

Die-cut lids: common questions

All FAQs

What is a die-cut lid?

A die-cut lid is a single piece of lidding material cut to the shape of a tray's sealing flange. It is heat sealed to the tray to close the sterile barrier system. Our lids are coated Tyvek® 1073B, cut in our ISO Class 8 cleanroom.

Do the lids arrive sterile?

No. The lids are components for your sterile barrier system. They are sealed to the tray, sterilized and validated as a system to ISO 11607-1 and ISO 11607-2 by the device maker or its contract manufacturer. We cut them in our ISO Class 8 cleanroom and pack them in sealed double bags inside the room to keep particulate low all the way to your line.

Can I order a small quantity or a prototype run?

Yes. Lids we cut in-house have no minimum order quantity, and prototype lids typically ship in weeks, not months. Send your tray spec on the quote form and we will come back with questions, a quote and a sample plan.

What do you need to quote a lid?

Send:

  • The tray spec or CAD file.
  • The tray material and lid dimensions.
  • Your sterilization method.
  • Whether you want a peel tab or print.
  • Prototype and production quantities and your timeline.

If a detail is unknown, leave it blank and we will ask.

Have a spec or a CAD file? Send it over.

Yours or your customer's, or a sketch if there's no spec yet. We'll reply within one business day with questions, then a quote and a sample plan.
